Tsukiji Outer Market 築地場外市場
The wholesale auction moved to Toyosu in 2018, but the outer market - roughly 400 stalls of tamagoyaki, grilled scallops, uni, tuna skewers, dried goods, knives and ceramics - never left, and it is the best standing-and-eating breakfast in the city. A group of five should split up, buy across different stalls and share; that gets you fifteen things instead of five.
Tip: Roughly 05:00-14:00. CLOSED SUNDAYS, most public holidays, and CERTAIN WEDNESDAYS - the 2027 calendar is not published yet, so check tsukiji.or.jp before going. Individual shops set their own days on top of that. Best 07:00-09:00; by 10:00 the queues are 30 minutes. Hamarikyu Gardens is a 15-min walk.

Hamarikyu Gardens 浜離宮恩賜庭園
A shogunal duck-hunting garden with a tidal seawater pond that rises and falls with Tokyo Bay, a 300-year-old black pine, and skyscrapers stacked directly behind the treeline - the best single image of old-vs-new Tokyo. Nakajima teahouse sits on stilts over the pond and serves matcha with a wagashi. Early March brings a small plum grove and a field of rapeseed flowers.
Tip: Open daily 09:00-17:00 (last entry 16:30). Best approach is the Tokyo Cruise water bus from Asakusa down the Sumida (approx 35-40 min) which includes garden admission - check the timetable, sailings are limited. Pair with Tsukiji, 15 min walk.

teamLab Planets TOKYO チームラボプラネッツ TOKYO DMM
The barefoot, wet version of teamLab in Toyosu: you walk knee-deep through a dark pool where projected koi burst into flowers when you touch them, through a mirrored infinity room, and across a moss garden of reflective ovoids. More physical and far more photogenic than Borderless, and better for a group of five because you experience the rooms together rather than dispersing.
Tip: OPEN THROUGH 2027 - the run has been extended twice and is currently scheduled to end 31 Dec 2027, so our dates are safe. Timed entry, online booking mandatory; popular slots go 2-4 weeks ahead. You WADE - wear shorts or trousers that roll above the knee, skip skirts, lockers provided, phone gets wet. Pick this OR Borderless, not both.

Tsukishima Monja Street 月島もんじゃストリート
About eighty monjayaki restaurants along one street on a reclaimed island. Monja is the loose, deliberately gloopy Tokyo ancestor of okonomiyaki - you cook it yourself on the table griddle, scraping it thin with small metal spatulas and eating it straight off the iron. It is hard to find outside Tokyo, it is cheap, and it is the most fun a group of five can have at a dinner table here.
Tip: RESERVE. Most shops have 4-6 person griddle tables and fill from 18:00. Iroha and Moheji have English menus and take online bookings (Tabelog or AutoReserve). Ask staff to cook the first one - the technique (build a ring of solids, pour the liquid inside) is not obvious. Tsukishima station, Oedo/Yurakucho lines.
