Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum 江戸東京たてもの園
Thirty historic buildings dismantled and rebuilt across a corner of Koganei Park: Meiji farmhouses, a 1925 photo studio, a prime minister's house, and a shitamachi shopping street you walk into rather than look at. The Kodakara-yu bathhouse interior is the acknowledged model for the bathhouse in Spirited Away. At ¥400 it is the best value cultural day in Tokyo and almost no first-time itinerary includes it.
Tip: CLOSED MONDAYS. October-March hours 09:30-16:30 - get there by 13:00 or you will rush it. Bus from JR Musashi-Koganei station to Koganei-koen Nishiguchi, then 5 min walk. Same JR Chuo line as Kichijoji/Mitaka, so it pairs with the Ghibli Museum in one westward day.

Ghibli Museum, Mitaka 三鷹の森ジブリ美術館
Miyazaki designed the building himself and it behaves accordingly - spiral staircases, a rooftop robot from Laputa, a room recreating an animator's desk mid-work, and the Saturn Theater which screens a 15-minute original Ghibli short you cannot see anywhere else in the world. Photography is banned inside, deliberately. It sits at the western edge of Inokashira Park, so Kichijoji is the same trip.
Tip: THE HARD BOOKING. Advance reservation only, no door sales, fixed date AND entry time. Tickets go on sale at 10:00 JST on the 10th of the preceding month - so ALL MARCH 2027 DATES OPEN 10 FEBRUARY 2027. Overseas buyers use the Lawson Ticket international portal (regional release times are staggered); weekend slots have gone in under 15 minutes. CLOSED TUESDAYS, so avoid 16 Mar. Assign one person to sit on the site at release.

Kichijoji & Inokashira Park 吉祥寺・井の頭恩賜公園
Consistently voted the neighbourhood Tokyoites most want to live in, and the returners' antidote to Shibuya: Harmonica Yokocho's warren of postwar market stalls turned into standing bars and tiny kitchens, Nakamichi-dori's independent shops, and Inokashira Park's boat pond five minutes south. The Ghibli Museum sits on the park's western edge, so the two are one trip.
Tip: Inokashira has early-blooming cherries and is one of Tokyo's best Somei-yoshino spots later in March - for our dates expect bare branches on the main trees. Harmonica Yokocho stalls seat 4-8; a group of 5 should arrive at 17:00 or split. 20 min from Shinjuku on the JR Chuo rapid.

Harmonica Yokocho ハモニカ横丁
A warren of postwar black-market stalls next to Kichijoji station turned into a hundred tiny bars and kitchens: standing sake, gyoza, oysters, curry, yakitori. The right dinner after Ghibli and the Inokashira Park walk, and the returners' favourite kind of Tokyo.
Tip: Stalls seat 4–8. Arrive at opening around 17:00 or split into 3+2 and hop. Cash at most places.
