Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden 新宿御苑
58 hectares of former imperial garden holding about 65 cherry varieties, which is exactly why it matters for our dates: the early trees (kawazu-zakura, kanzakura, Yokohama-hizakura, shidare) flower from mid-February into mid-March, weeks before the Somei-yoshino that everyone else is waiting for. Three garden styles - English landscape, French formal, Japanese traditional - plus a Taiwan-style pavilion and a greenhouse.
Tip: Closed Mondays (open when Monday is a holiday, closed the following day) - so closed Mon 15 Mar 2027. Hours change mid-trip: approx 09:00-16:00 until 14 Mar, 09:00-17:30 from 15 Mar - verify on the official site. No alcohol allowed. Advance online tickets recommended once sakura season starts.

Meiji Jingu 明治神宮
The Shinto counterweight to Senso-ji's Buddhism, and the better of the two for atmosphere: a 70-hectare planted forest of 100,000 donated trees in the middle of Shibuya, entered through Japan's largest wooden torii. The walk from Harajuku station to the main hall takes 10 minutes and drops the city noise almost completely. Weekend mornings often produce a Shinto wedding procession crossing the courtyard.
Tip: Opening tracks sunrise/sunset - roughly 05:40-17:20 in mid-March. Free. Pair with Harajuku/Omotesando or with Shinjuku Gyoen (25 min walk apart). The Inner Garden's irises are a June thing, skip it in March.

Nezu Museum 根津美術館
Kengo Kuma's low bamboo-lined entrance corridor sets up a collection of Japanese and East Asian art including Ogata Korin's Irises screens, but the real reason to come is the 17,000 sqm hillside garden behind it - stone lanterns, a pond, four tea houses and moss, in the middle of Aoyama. It is the best garden-to-effort ratio in central Tokyo.
Tip: CLOSED MONDAYS (open on holiday Mondays, closed the Tuesday after). 10:00-17:00, last entry 16:30. Book online - weekend walk-ups are frequently refused. Also closes between exhibitions, so check the calendar for March 2027. The garden is only reachable with a museum ticket. NEZUCAFE overlooks it.

Shibuya Sky 渋谷スカイ
An open-air rooftop 230 m directly above the Scramble crossing, on top of Shibuya Scramble Square. Better than Skytree for this group because you are standing inside the city looking across it rather than outside looking in, and Fuji sits on the western horizon on a clear March evening. It handles the whole Shibuya obligation - crossing, Hachiko, Center-gai - in one stop.
Tip: Book online: slots open about four weeks ahead and the sunset slot (sunset is roughly 17:45 in mid-March) sells out within minutes of release. Closes the rooftop in high wind or rain - keep a rain date. Nothing loose in your pockets up top; phones must be on a strap.

Sushi Tokyo Ten, Shibuya 鮨 とうきょう 十 渋谷
Omakase sushi at a fraction of the famous counters' prices, and the easiest good omakase booking in Tokyo for foreigners because it sits on TableCheck. Weekday lunch is the bargain; dinner still lands well under the group's ¥15,000 ceiling.
Tip: Book on TableCheck, free and instant, a few weeks out for five seats in one sitting. Counter seating; a party of five may be split across the L.

Afuri, Ebisu AFURI 恵比寿
Yuzu-shio ramen: a light, citrus-lifted chicken broth that is the opposite of tonkotsu heaviness, in the original Ebisu shop. The point for this group is that Afuri has tables and branches, so five people can eat ramen together without a 15-seat counter splitting them up.
Tip: Ticket machine; branches in Harajuku, Roppongi, Nakameguro and elsewhere if Ebisu is out of the way. Vegan ramen on the menu.
